Multimodality and translanguaging in negotiation of meaning

The present study examines the role that multimodality and translanguaging play in scaffolding oral interactions during language-related episodes (LREs) involving meaning negotiation. tasks carried out using synchronous video-based computer-mediated communication were part of a tandem virtual exchange (Spain, Canada). participants, 18 dyads English Spanish college-level learners, conducted three interaction pairs online. LREs identified transcribed data analyzed quantitatively qualitatively, including all instances uses multiple modes meaning-making. Quantitative revealed involved not only Spanish, but also other shared languages occurred mostly Additionally, use multimodal elements, gestures, postures, gaze, digital physical devices (mobile devices, computers, props, notes) was examined. Qualitative analyses interplay between learners’ multilingual repertoires which reinforced complemented meaning-making these episodes.
